Random chat is fun because it is unscripted. It stays fun when you know exactly what the controls are and use a few boring habits. Here is both, organised the way a chat actually happens.
Before you tap Start
Decide once what you never share on camera or in chat: full name, address, workplace, socials, anything with your payment details on it. Making that decision before a charming stranger asks is the entire trick. Check what is behind you in frame before you start — a video chat begins once you allow camera access, so whatever is in shot is visible from the first second.
During a chat
On the room screen you get skip, which closes the room and finds someone new, and a mute button for your own microphone. Block and report live on the other person's profile page: blocking keeps them from being matched with you again, and reporting opens a separate form that sends the details for review. If anyone pressures you — for personal details, for money, to move to another app — that is not a conversation, that is a script. Skip it. Moderation also runs continuously in the background.
After — if something was wrong
Report first, from that person's profile page if you can. If you want a person to look at it, email [email protected] with roughly when it happened. Reports involving anyone who looks under 18 are handled first — umegle is strictly 18+.
Common safety questions
Is umegle anonymous?
You do not create an account or share your name to chat. What you show on camera and say in a room is up to you — anonymity is only as strong as what you choose to reveal.
Can the other person find me afterwards?
Rooms close when either person leaves and there is no friend list or message history between strangers. Nobody can re-enter a chat with you unless random matching happens to pair you again.
What should I report?
Anything that would not be acceptable face-to-face: harassment, threats, scams, recording without consent, and — above all — anyone who appears to be under 18. Reports are anonymous.
